What Is Trenchless Sewer Repair?

Trenchless repair is a modern approach to sewer line repair that gets the job done without the mess, the stress, or the massive excavation bill. Instead of digging up your entire yard, we use advanced technology to repair or replace your sewer line from the inside.

We access your pipes through existing entry points (like cleanouts or even your toilet) and fix the problem without major excavation. Most trenchless sewer line repair jobs can be completed in a single day, and you won’t be left with a construction zone in your yard when we’re done.

Traditional sewer line repair usually involves digging a long trench across your property to access the damaged pipe. This means removing grass, plants, concrete, and sometimes even parts of your driveway or patio. Once the repair or replacement is complete, you’re left with the added expense and hassle of restoring your property.

Here at Clark County Plumbing & Drain, we use the NuFlow system for our trenchless sewer repairs. This pipe lining technology creates what we call a “pipe within a pipe.” We feed specialized materials into your damaged sewer line, then expand them to form a new, seamless pipe inside the old one.

The result is a fully rehabilitated pipe that’s often stronger and more durable than the original. The entire process is faster, cleaner, and far less disruptive than traditional methods.

Common Problems that Require Sewer Line Repair

Tree Root Intrusion

This is one of the most common issues we encounter in the Pacific Northwest. Trees and shrubs naturally seek out water sources, and your sewer line is like an underground river to them. Over time, roots can work their way into tiny cracks or joints in your pipes. Once inside, they grow and expand, creating blockages and eventually breaking the pipe apart from the inside.

Aging and Corroded Pipes

Many homes in Clark County were built decades ago with cast iron, clay, or Orangeburg pipes. These materials were standard at the time, but they don’t last forever. Cast iron corrodes from the inside out. Clay pipes become brittle and crack. Orangeburg (a tar-paper material used in the mid-20th century) often collapses entirely.

Ground Shifting and Settling

The soil in Southwest Washington isn’t always stable. Over time, the ground beneath your property can shift, settle, or move due to changes in moisture levels, seismic activity, or nearby construction. When this happens, your sewer line can become misaligned, cracked, or even completely separated at the joints.

Grease, Debris, & Buildup

While not technically a pipe failure, severe buildup inside your sewer line can cause just as many problems. Grease, soap residue, and other debris can accumulate over time, restricting flow and eventually causing complete blockages. In some cases, the buildup can actually damage the pipe itself.

Bellied or Sagging Pipes

Sometimes a section of your sewer line will sink or “belly” due to soil conditions or improper installation. This creates a low spot where waste and water collect instead of flowing freely toward the main sewer. Over time, this can lead to recurring clogs, backups, and unpleasant odors.

4 Benefits of Trenchless Repair

  1. The most obvious benefit of trenchless sewer line repair is that we don’t have to tear up your yard. No trenches, no heavy machinery destroying your lawn, no damaged driveways or patios.
  2. Traditional sewer line repair services can take days or even weeks to complete. Trenchless sewer pipe repair cuts that timeline dramatically. Most jobs can be completed in a single day.
  3. While the upfront cost of trenchless repair is sometimes comparable to traditional methods, the total cost is often much lower.
  4. Trenchless methods are simply less of a headache overall. The entire process is cleaner, quieter, and more convenient for you and your neighbors.

Costs and Considerations

The cost of sewer repair services varies depending on several factors, including the length of the damaged section, the accessibility of your pipes, and the specific type of damage we’re dealing with.

The best way to get an accurate price is to schedule a camera inspection. This lets us see exactly what’s going on inside your pipes so we can give you a clear, honest estimate. We’ll explain what we found, what we recommend, and what it will cost.

We believe in honest, transparent pricing with no surprise fees. It’s been our approach since we opened our doors in 2011, and it’s why so many Clark County homeowners trust us.

When Trenchless Repair Is Not an Option

We always want to be upfront with you about when trenchless makes sense and when it doesn’t.

When trenchless isn’t an option, we also offer traditional sewer replacement and installation services. Our goal is always to find the best solution for your problem, whatever that looks like.

  • If your pipe has completely collapsed, there’s nothing for the new liner to adhere to. Trenchless methods need some structure remaining in the existing pipe. When a pipe has fully failed, excavation and replacement may be the only option.
  • Severely bellied or sagging pipes can sometimes be problematic for trenchless repair. If the low spot is significant enough, the liner might not solve the underlying drainage problem. The waste will still collect in that low spot, leading to continued issues. In these cases, we may need to excavate and correct the slope of the pipe.
  • Certain older pipe materials can also present challenges. While the NuFlow system works on most pipe types, there are rare situations where the condition of the existing pipe makes lining impractical. We’ll always be honest with you about whether trenchless is viable for your specific situation.
